Keeping the Yiddishkeit Alive - surviving & thriving after the Christchurch earthquake

Location: JS

Troubling times have a way of exposing a community. They will show the weaknesses, the strengths and have the potential to crumble and shatter a community until there is very little left. When Canterbury Hebrew Congregation was left without a synagogue, with members who were injured, members who lost everything, with members who had to move away to escape everything, it could have happened that way. But it didn't! Keeping the Yiddishkeit alive soon became a rallying cry as the community got together and grew stronger. While times are tough, being Jewish and being part of a Jewish community can be a great comfort. This session will explore how CHC kept the Yiddishkeit going, what lessons were learned and will hopefully help you to make sure your community is prepared.
