Location: R4

In his novel Il giardino dei Finzi-Contini, [The Garden of the Finzi-Continis], published in 1962, Jewish author Giorgio Bassani gives us a portrait of a tragic time for the Italian Jews, as lived by a group of young people coming of age in the city of Ferrara during the time of the Fascist racial laws. A few years later, Bassani’s novel was transformed by director Vittorio De Sica into an award-winning movie, a visually stunning portrayal of friendship, love and death in a setting reminiscent of the Garden of Eden. Both the novel and the film, portraying history through a personal story, represent key historical events for the Italian Jews (their adhesion to fascism, their reaction to the racial laws, their deportation to concentration camps) which I will discuss in my presentation.
